Homemade Fruit Roll Up Fail
One of my favourite things to do on a sunny Friday when I was living in Sydney was to visit the local farmer’s markets. I'd go and grab a coffee and a muffin and wander the stalls picking up lots of yummy fresh fruit and veggies, amazing bread, spices and healthy snacks. One of my favourite snacks was the homemade fruit roll-ups!
So the other day when I was sitting in the sun and reminiscing about those markets, I decided to try to make my own homemade fruit roll-ups. I did some googling and checked out the recipes on Pinterest and I was feeling pretty confident. My favourite flavour back in Aus was the Kiwi and Strawberry ones, so I decided to start there.
How did it go?
Let's just say it didn't go exactly to plan. I mean, to be honest, it wasn't a complete disaster. I did manage to salvage a few yummy roll-ups. It's just that after all the effort I was hoping for a few more than 6, and a whole lot less mess!
I felt like I made a strong start. Simmering the fruit, adding just the right amount of sugar, and getting it to the perfect consistency. I was still confident when I had put the tray in the oven and set my timer for 5 hours. They would be ready just in time for afternoon tea! The smell of burning fruit only 2 hours later brought me back to reality. After breaking off the burnt pieces and throwing away the part I couldn't separate from the foil. I was left with 6 almost perfect, delicious homemade fruit roll-ups :)
Would I try it again?
Yes, I'll definitely give these another go. This time using the recipe I already have here. I think I've learned from my mistakes and after a little practice, I'll be able to get these right. But for now, I'll try and savour these 6 yummy, if not so good looking roll ups :)
Cheers, Jess
