If you're anything like me, you love Sunday mornings. My favourite ones are slow and quiet and relaxing. I like to start with a coffee and then take a stroll with the puppy. No rushing allowed on Sunday mornings around here! Then I like to head back to the couch with another cuppa and a good book. I try not to sleep in on Sundays so that I can get the most out of the relaxing day. Last Sunday I posted my first book review, I hope you enjoyed it! I loved writing it so much that I have another one for you today. So go make yourself a cuppa, get comfy and enjoy reading :)

Douglas Petersen's world is turned upside down when he is woken early one morning by his wife Connie, who announces that she is thinking about divorce. Filled with hope that he can change Connie's mind, Douglas decides that this holiday is the perfect opportunity to not only convince his wife not to leave him, but also to reconnect with his son, before he too leaves home.Before reading Us, I'd never heard of David Nicholls, but the blurb enticed me with the potential for reignited love, a journey against the odds (as well as across Europe) and hopefully a happily ever after.

SO WHAT DID I get from Us?

Unlike a few books I've read this year, I was instantly engaged in the story. I found it very easy to read and finished it in only five days. Which is really quick for me!The narrator was Douglas throughout the book, which could have given me a biased view of events, but it made me feel more immersed. I also enjoyed that the chapters switched between Douglas's present day and the past. Any questions I had during a present day chapter were generally answered in the following one about the past. For example; why is outgoing Connie married to the uptight Douglas?The quirky chapter titles were amusing, and i enjoyed the moment in each where their meanings were revealed. It kept things a little more light-hearted. Us took me through so many emotions whilst reading about Douglas and his journey. I enjoyed the catastrophes that kept happening on their holiday and how Douglas overcame them before walking straight into the next one. I felt hopeful that things would work out in the end and I also felt sad a lot of the time. Especially when thinking about how opposites can attract and complement each other. Until they don’t. Then you’re just left with a great big divide. Douglas is a quiet scientist and Connie is an outgoing artist, can they make it work despite all their differences? You'll have to read it to find out for yourself :)I will leave you with one final note. The unexpected ending is very much an untraditional love story, that’s equally as exciting as it is heart wrenching. I laughed and I cried a few times each over the five days I was reading this book. I'm not sure I would go searching the library shelves for another David Nicholls, but I definitely enjoyed this one. I gave it four out of five stars on Goodreads.I hope you enjoyed this review. My current read is The One Plus One by Jojo Moyes, which may take me a little longer than a week to read!
